KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate authorities condemned the decision not to invite its representatives to the UN climate conference, as the talks opened in Dubai.
A statement issued by the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), said that not inviting the representatives of the Islamic Emirate to the meeting on climate change, the obstacles and limited access of Afghanistan to financial mechanisms and the non-implementation of projects compatible with climate change in this country are a great injustice to the citizens of Afghanistan.
“If we could participate in this meeting, we would be able to bring the vulnerability of Afghanistan to the attention of the international community in a scientific and technical way and present the document of Afghanistan’s national contribution according to the Paris Agreement.” Rohullah Amin, head of this agency, told Salam Watandar.
The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) has been held with the presence of 70,000 delegates from around the world. No representative from Afghanistan has been invited.
This conference which was held on Thursday, November 30 hosted by the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai, will continue until December 12.
This session has been held with the aim of reducing Earth’s temperature and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations authorities.
“We need a global commitment to triple renewable energy and increase clean energy for all by 2030” says Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN.
Officials of the national environmental protection agency, say that Afghanistan is the sixth country over the world that has suffered the most damage from climate change.
Meanwhile, a number of environmental experts say that Afghanistan has a small share in the production of greenhouse gases, but it has suffered the most damage from this area.
Drought, lack of drinking water, devastating floods, rising air temperature and global warming, are considered as prominent factors of climate change. According to them, if the representative of Afghanistan does not attend this meeting, Afghanistan will be deprived of the support of the world in the field of climate change.
It should be mentioned that Afghanistan’s membership in the United Nations Climate Change Convention was approved in September 2002, and since then until the Islamic Emirate’s rule, the representative of Afghanistan always participated in its meetings.
