KABUL (SW) – On the World Diabetes Day, health experts have warned of the spread of diabetes across Afghanistan.

Haider Khan Omar, the general director of disease prevention and control of the Ministry of Public Health, and Wali Naseri, the head of the Endocrinology Association, told a conference in this connection that 50% of diabetes prevention is in the hands of the people themselves, which can be solved through advertising, prevention and advice.

Haider Khan, said: “Our demand from the elders and the municipality is that they should dedicate an area for exercise so that mothers and children can exercise easily and freely and people stop smoking.”

Wali Naseri said: “We must take practical and decisive steps. This cannot be done with slogans alone, the municipality and the Ministry of Information and Culture should see what people are using in our society. In 50% of supermarkets, there are colorful drinks and they should increase the tax on these to discourage people from consuming it.”

In his remarks, Haider Khan Haider, the general director of disease prevention and control of the Ministry of Public Health, said that lack of balance in food and lack of exercise will increase the number of people with diabetes and will eventually bring disaster to the society.

He adds: “In our country, the prevalence of viral diseases is increasing day by day. If the Ministry of Public Health and other institutions do not cooperate, people cannot control this on theirown. More attention should be paid to prevention. “Doctors’ recommendations are very influential on people.”

The representative of the World Health Organization also said in this program that three out of every four people in the world are at risk of diabetes and one out of every two people with diabetes has no knowledge about their disease.

However, doctors in a number of diabetes treatment centers are complaining about the lack of facilities and the increase in mortality due to this disease. Hasibullah Mohammadi, a doctor in the diabetes treatment department at Wazir Mohammad Akbarkhan Hospital, said that many people with diabetes in this hospital die because of the lack of medicine.

However, the World Health Organization once again announced its cooperation in the field of diabetes control and the provision of services and facilities in this field to the Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan.
