Local communities mobilise to raise funds for Herat earthquake victims

KABUL (SW) – Local communities in different parts of Afghanistan have mobilised on voluntary basis to gather charity funds for the victims of Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Herat.

Fahim, the person in charge of collecting public donations in the area of “Parvan Hotel” in Kabul city, said that he has launched seven campaigns in different parts of the capital with the aim of helping the victims of the earthquake in Herat. According to him, the collected donations will be sent to Herat after packaging.

He adds: “This is public assistance. Our citizens can help whatever they can; such as food, blankets, tents and other things. We should all share in each other’s grief, our countrymen should not be left alone in this tragedy.”

Nafisa Danesh, another person in charge of collecting people’s aid in the “Qala Najara” area of Kabul city, who has launched four campaigns in different parts of the capital, also says: “Our goal is to sympathize with the people of Herat. With these campaigns, maybe those who are down will build their lives again. We collect everything that can be transported to Herat.”

Hasina Hamdard, another person in charge of collecting public aid for Herat earthquake victims in Kabul city, said: “Since we started this campaign, we have collected some essential household items. Besides that, we have collected 23 kinds of men’s clothes, 35 kinds of women’s clothes, 12 kinds of children’s clothes and 35 kinds of women’s and men’s boots.”

Campaigns to collect aid for Herat earthquake victims have also been launched and started in the provinces of Helmand, Jawzjan, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Paktia, Paktika, Nimroz, Farah, Zabul, Khost, Ghazni and Logar, along with Kabul.

Habibullah, a resident of Paktia’s Zurmat district, says that in the past two days, tens of thousands of afghanis have been collected by the residents of this district to help the victims of the earthquake in Herat.

He adds: “We created this tent to help the people of Herat. People bring their donations, many donations have been in cash. We are trying to set up tents in other districts as well.”

Hamed, a civil activist in Nangarhar, also said: “Our people in Herat have suffered huge casualties and financial losses. For this reason, the youth in Nangarhar created a fundraising fund and we ask people to come and help the people of Herat in this way.”

Abdul Wase, a resident of Kandahar, has asked the citizens to help the victims of the earthquake in Herat as much as they can. He said: “The people of Herat need our help. Everyone should help as much as they can because we all share this sadness. We request the merchants and residents of Kandahar to contribute to this fund.”

Cricket stars Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and a number of artists, journalists, writers and poets of the country have also launched an online campaign to collect aid for the victims of the earthquake in Herat.
