Lack of water dispalces communities in Samangan

SAMANGAN (SW) – A number of locals in Samangan have been leaving their homes due to absolute dearth of clean drinking water.

The village of “Sheikhak Fulad” in the Dara Sof district of Samangan, which accommodates more than a thousand families, is about eight hours away from the center of this district.

The residents of the village say that their springs and wells have been dry for months and they have had to walk for six hours to get water from the neighboring villages. According to them, more than a thousand families live in the village, but due to the lack of water, some families have left this village.

Zinullah, one of the elders of the village, told Salam Watandar that more than 1000 families live in this village and they have been facing severe water shortage for the past six months.

Abdul Qadir, another resident of this village, also says: “There are three families in one house. One has gone to one side, one has moved to Mazar-e-Sharif. He has gone from one house to two houses. One is left because of farming and gardening. Many people have gone.”

Residents of the village add that the recent droughts have severely affected them.

Ahmed, one of the residents of this village, says: “There are many problems, you can see that our fields have neither wheat nor barley. Our lands are all barren. This year, we will buy a wheat from the district center for 1,000 afghanis and a barley for 400 afghanis for our donkeys.”

At the same time, Shamsullah Shamshad, the district governor, confirms the problems of the residents of the village and says that all the villagers of this district are facing water shortage. He asks the relief agencies to take care of the problems of these villagers.

The district governor adds: “The people of Dara Souf district are suffering from water problems. This matter has reached the authority of the province and the supporting institutions. Until now, the aid organizations have supplied water by tankers. However, no assistance has been provided in the this area yet.”

It should be mentioned that as a result of the lack of snow and rain, many springs and wells have dried up in different provinces, which has caused the residents of these areas to face a severe shortage of water, and even the residents of some remote areas of the country have lost their homes due to lack of access to water and have left.
