4,500 Afghan citizens in Iranian prisons

KABUL (SW) – Officials at the prisons affairs administration say that 4,500 Afghan citizens are currently in Iranian prisons.

Officials add that this number of citizens have been imprisoned in Iran on charges of various crimes.

Mohammad Nasim Lalhand, the spokesperson of the prisons affairs regulatory authority, says that as a result of the talks between the authorities of the Islamic Emirate and the Iranian authorities in the last two years, 1,118 Afghan citizens who were in Iranian prisons have been transferred to Afghanistan.

He adds: “Currently, from 4,000 to 4,500 people are imprisoned in Iran on charges of various crimes, and so far, 1,118 Afghan citizens who were imprisoned in Iranian prisons have been transferred to Afghanistan in two stages. ”

Officials in the prisons affairs regulatory authority emphasized that after the transfer of imprisoned Afghans from Iran to Afghanistan, the Supreme Court of Afghanistan will decide on their cases based on the laws of the country.

However, yesterday, Alireza Mahmoudi, the director general of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has recently said that about six thousand Afghan citizens are imprisoned in Iranian prisons.

It should be mentioned that in the past few years, over three million Afghans have immigrated to Iran and have faced physical and psychological violence from time to time.
