Polio vaccination drive to kickoff on Monday

KABUL (SW) – The nationwide campaign to deliver the polio vaccine will start tomorrow in the western region of the country, said officials.

This campaign will start from Monday in Herat, Farah, Ghor and Badghis, and will continue from house to house for the next three days.
Officials at the Herat Public Health Department say that in this round of the campaign, about 1.25 million children under the age of five will receive anti-polio vaccine.

Mohammad Asif Kabir, Deputy Director of Public Health of Herat, told Salam Watandar: “The campaign is applicable in all provinces. It will start from tomorrow, Monday in Herat, and children under the age of five will be vaccinated. In addition to polio, anti-worm tablets are also given to children aged two to five years.”

He asked all families to cooperate with health workers in the field of anti-polio vaccination and vaccinate their children.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Talib Shahid, head of public health in Herat, says that preparations have been made to implement the anti-polio vaccination campaign in Herat. The head of public health of Herat added: “The target number of children in Herat are 758,631 children under five years old.”

A number of Herat residents, expressing their satisfaction with the start of the anti-polio vaccination campaign, say that they are ready to take their children to health centers and mosques for vaccination. Mohammad Shafi Laali, a resident of Herat, said: “Anyone who does not vaccinate their child against polio, there is a possibility that their child will get this disease [polio disease].”

Gholam Rasool, another resident of Herat, says: “As a father, I consider myself responsible to vaccinate my children to ensure their health and future.”

According to reports, no positive polio events have been registered in the western region of the country in recent years.
