KABUL (SW) – Desperate wait and anxiety is a common sight among hundreds of needy individuals and family at the random aid distribution points in Kabul city these days.
Out of this huge population, only 400 families, whose names are already included in a list of the needy, could enter one such aid distribution center and get a sack of flour and a sack of wheat after standing in line for hours. However, the poverty that plagues the citizens has drawn a number of those whose names are not included in this list to this center.
Many that are rejected must return home empty handed.
The needy who stand in line, complaining about the hardshipts of life, are happy that they were able to be included in the list and get help, but they do not consider these aids to be enough and they want more arrests from the government and aid agencies.
Hamida, one of the needy, who also has her sick child in her arms, said that her husband spends all his days wandering around the city to find a livelihood. “We are poor and in need. My husband is a laborer and only manages to earn occasionally to bring food to home”.
Next to Hamida, another woman named Turpiki was sitting, whose wrinkled face shows a lot of sadness. Turpiki’s husband, who was the sole breadwinner of the family, has not been able to get up for some time due to old age and illness. “Neighbors help us, our situation is bad. Now this year, everyone’s situation is bad and they are giving less help. They used to help a lot, our house is cold and there is no mean for heating.”
Meanwhile, Mohammad Abbas Akhund, Acting Minister of the Government for Disaster Management, while distributing aid to needy families, pointed out the spread of poverty in the country, and called for more attention to the situation of the needy. He also emphasized transparency in the process of distributing aid to the needy.
“I have said one thing many times and I want to repeat again that the aid that comes from outside is for the needy; It is not allowed for others. If we betray this and give it to someone else, it means theft.”
It should be mentioned that following the rise to power of the Islamic Emirate and the increase in unemployment, poverty is also increasing in the country. In some corners of the country, people have even sold a part of their body or their children due to poverty.
