More than 10,000 excess deaths were reported during the heatwave that engulfed Western Europe in late June 2026.
Reuters reported on Monday (July 13) that, according to EuroMOMO data, 10,650 excess deaths were recorded in late June. The heatwave brought record-breaking temperatures to several countries, including France, Spain, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.
The extreme heat disrupted power supplies, forced schools to close, and shattered temperature records in France, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
More than 9,000 of the excess deaths were among people aged 65 and older.
Extreme heat can cause heat stroke and worsen heart and respiratory diseases, with older people among the most vulnerable.
