3 water reservoirs will be built in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – At least three water reservoirs with the cost of 100 million afghanis will be built in Kandahar province, confirmed officials. 

A number of residents of Kandahar expressed their concern about the drought and the decrease in the water level in this province and say that this issue has caused the residents of Kandahar to face many problems.

They added that recently people’s access to drinking water has also faced problems and many families buy water with money.

At the same time, by the order of the leader of the Islamic Emirate, in order to prevent the wastage of rainwater, 3 water dams will be built in Shahwalikot and Spinboldak districts of Kandahar province.

According to officials, with the construction of these the impact of drought on irrigation and agriculture will be significantly reduced.

Mahmoud Mazloum, the head of agriculture, irrigation and livestock in Kandahar, told Salam Watandar that the work on the construction of other dams is  going on.

“One of these dams will be built in Spinboldak district and the other two dams will be built in Shahwalikot district. The government, with the cooperation of donor institutions, has also started the work of investigating the creation of other dams”.

The head of agriculture in Kandahar emphasizes that these dams will be built at a cost of 100 million afghanis in order to prevent water wastage.

Abdul Khaliq, head of the dam construction project in Spinboldak and Shahwalikot districts, says that the construction of these dams has been completed 80%. “These dams have the capacity to store more than 5 million cubic meters of water and can irrigate 50,000 acres of land.”
