Uzbekistan to stage international conference on Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – Uzbekistan is set to stage an international conference on the situation in Afghanistan, confirmed officials.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has announced that this meeting will be held on the 25th and 26th of this month and representatives of 20 countries and international organizations will be present.

Officials of the Islamic Emirate have also been invited to the international meeting of Uzbekistan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has emphasized that although a delegation from the caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate will participate in this meeting but their presence does not mean recognizing the Islamic Emirate.

The Islamic Emirate confirmed that a delegation led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sector ministries will participate in this meeting. Bilal Karimi, one of the deputy spokespersons of the Islamic Emirate, said Afghanistan has specific requests for the participants of the international meeting of Uzbekistan.

Karimi told Salaam Watandar: “All meetings should be useful and productive and respond to the needs of the Afghan people. From the meeting that is going to be held, our expectation is that the problems and priorities of the Afghan people will be taken into account and cooperation with the Islamic Emirate will take place”.

On the other hand, a number of political experts believe that the countries of the region, especially Uzbekistan, are concerned about the situation and crises in Afghanistan and are trying to find an effective solution to the problem of Afghanistan by launching this meeting.

Mahmoud Ankhrebi, a political expert, says that Uzbekistan is still worried about the security of its common border with Afghanistan, and that the country is still trying to share border security threats with the authorities of the Islamic Emirate.

Mehdi Afzali, another expert on political issues, said the lack of a dominant power and the destruction of security structures has created a power vacuum. “Countries are trying to create a focus to find a solution. The meeting of the countries of the region is a result of the fear that the countries of the region have from Afghanistan”.

The international meeting of Uzbekistan will be held while five rockets were fired into Uzbekistan from Afghanistan earlier this month. The caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate confirmed the launch of rockets from Afghanistan to Uzbekistan and called it the work of ‘evil circles’.
