Prices up in Kabul markets as Eid-ul-Fitr approaches

KABUL (SW) – Kabul residents say that the prices of goods and dried fruits in particular have gone up in the markets with the approach of Eid-ul-Fitr.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of citizens said that the recent developments in the country have weakened the economy and made it difficult for the people to buy fruits and vegetables for Eid.

Obaidullah, who came to Kabul’s Mandavi to buy dried fruit, said buying and selling has slowed down and people could not afford to buy for Eid. He added that in the past people had money and were able to solve their problems, but now economic problems on the one hand and unemployment on the other have led people to spend less.

Meanwhile, Basir Ahmad, another resident of Kabul, said that due to lack of market control by the Islamic Emirate, prices of goods and dried fruits have gone up and purchases have dropped.

According to him, the price of a kilo of pea used to be 5 afghanis, but now the price has gone up to 5 afghanis. Basir Ahmad added that prices of goods and fruits have risen and the people’s economy has weakened.

Although Kabul residents have accused the Islamic Emirate and the Kabul municipality of not controlling the market, Kabul municipality officials say they have developed a new price list that sets out the prices of food and dried fruits.

Kabul Municipality Spokesman Nematullah Barakzai told Salam Watandar:

«The price list of Kabul Municipality, which is scheduled to be published today, specifies the price of 5 items. It includes a lot of Eid fruits, such as cakes, apples and others for which prices have been set. ”

This is at a time when the level of hunger and unemployment has risen since the Islamic Emirate came to power, causing many problems for the people.
