Analysts warn cut in aid would cause catastrophe

KABUL (SW) – Analysts warn Afghanistan would face a catastrophe if the ongoing humanitarian support was halted.

The special envoys of the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Britain and the United States of America said in a joint statement on Friday that their assistance would henceforth depend on the functioning of the Islamic Emirate in  Afghanistan.

The statement said that the Islamic Emirate does not treat women and ethnic minorities well. The statement condemned the Islamic Emirate’s decision to close girls’ schools and impose restrictions on women, and called on the Islamic Emirate to fulfill its obligations to respect the rights of women, girls and minorities.

Meanwhile, Arefa Fatemi, a political scientist and women’s rights activist, told Salam Watandar that the suspension of international aid to Afghanistan will cause a humanitarian catastrophe. She emphasized that women’s rights are the red line of the international community and Afghan women.

“The precondition for the international community and the European Union is for the Islamic Emirate to prove in practice that it is committed to human rights, especially the rights of women in Afghanistan,” she said. “But our concern is that a humanitarian catastrophe will occur if there is a cut in humanitarian aid in Afghanistan.”

On the other hand, a number of other experts say that the Islamic Emirate should interact with the world when the opportunity arises to end the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. They call on the international community not to compromise on humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and to help the people of Afghanistan.

We tried to have the views of the spokesmen of the Islamic Emirate in connection with this declaration, but we did not succeed despite repeated calls.
