Arresting Jalal described as curbs on freedom of speech

KABUL (SW) – The Federation of Journalists and Media of Afghanistan called the detention of Faizullah Jalal, a professor at Kabul University, by the forces of the Islamic Emirate as a curb on freedom of expression, and called the continuation of such detentions contrary to human rights values and laws.

The federation has issued a statement calling on the Islamic Emirate to release the university professor as soon as possible in order to prevent further damage to freedom of expression and freedom of the media.

Earlier, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, has confirmed on Twitter that Faizullah Jalal, a professor at Kabul University, had been arrested by Islamic Emirate forces.

Mujahid wrote that Faizullah Jalal had been arrested for propagating “his nonsense on social media.”
The spokesman for the Islamic Emirate accused Jalal of playing “against the regime” and playing with the people’s dignity.
Faizullah Jalal was arrested from his home in Kabul yesterday. His arrest has provoked widespread reactions on social media, and even a campaign has been launched to secure his release.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have condemned his detention and called for his immediate and unconditional release.
