The European Union (EU) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Afghanistan have launched a €5 million initiative to help Afghan farmers and agribusinesses.
In a post on X on Sunday (September 13), the FAO said the initiative aims to drive innovation, create jobs in rural areas, and build agricultural value chains that are more resilient to climate change.
The agency said the initiative would support vulnerable households, including returnees, their host communities, and internally displaced people, particularly women and youth, in districts facing food insecurity, climate-related risks, and limited economic opportunities.
The report said that four service centers would be established under the initiative to help farmers and rural entrepreneurs gain access to markets, agricultural advice, specialized services, and agricultural businesses.
The FAO also said that 2,000 hectares of degraded forests and rangelands would be restored and that 250 women- and community-led nurseries would receive support through the initiative.
