Girls remain deprived of rights to education, says AI

MONITORING (SW) – The Amnesty International has stated that girls in Afghanistan have not been allowed to go to school for several months and have been deprived of their basic right to education.

On World Education Day, the organization wrote on Twitter that for 129 days now, female students over the age of 12 in Afghanistan have been barred from going to school by the Islamic Emirate. According to the organization, Afghan girls and women have been deprived of their basic right to education.

Amnesty International has emphasized that despite national and international pressures and lawsuits, women are still denied access to their basic right to education by the Islamic Emirate.

The organization has called on everyone to stand by the girls of Afghanistan. Amnesty International has issued a hashtag “Open girls’ schools” calling on Islamic Emirate officials to allow girls to study.

With the rise to power of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, female students above the sixth grade are not allowed to go to school. The officials of the Islamic Emirate have stated that the reason for the closure of the girls’ schools is the unsuitable educational environment. The officials have emphasized upon reopening according to the new plan.

However, the Ministry of Education of the Islamic Emirate has recently announced that schools will reopen to all female students across Afghanistan next spring.
