Heavy snowfall disrupts key transportation routes

KABUL (SW)  – Heavy snow and storms since last night have closed the Badghis-Herat highway and other transport routes in Ghor, Bamyan and Daikundi provinces, including the main Salangh Pass to the northern provinces.

Local officials in Badghis and a number of drivers on the Qala-e-Nau – Herat highway said more than 15 passenger cars are trapped in the snow at the Sabzak Dam area in Badghis and are in urgent need of assistance.

Local officials in Ghor, Bamyan and Daikundi provinces also emphasized that most of the districts’ roads to the provincial capitals have been closed to commuters.

Officials say the roads have not been reopened and efforts are underway to clear and reopen them.

Mohammad Hamas, information director of the Ghor Department of Information and Culture, said work was underway on the Ghor route to reopen the roads. “The Department of Public Works is also emphasizing that we will open the road as soon as possible.”

Simultaneously with the closure of traffic routes in the mentioned provinces, the Salang highway has been closed since last night due to heavy snow and storms.

Local officials in the provinces, whose roads are closed to traffic, have urged travelers not to travel until the situation improves and the roads are cleaned.
