Pakistani premier’s remarks condemned by Afghans

KABUL (SW) – Recent remarks by the Prime Minister of Pakistan about Afghanistan at the extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has stirred strong reaction.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Afghanistan yesterday that the ISIL had attacked Pakistan from Afghanistan. He also called the deprivation of education for Afghan women as part of Afghan culture. Imran Khan’s remarks have drawn strong condemnation from Afghan citizens.

Noor Shah Noorani, a political analyst, called the Pakistani prime minister’s remarks biased, untrue and interfering in Afghanistan’s internal affairs. He says Afghan citizens may react sharply if Pakistani officials do not refrain from making negative statements about Afghanistan.

Abdul Haq Emad, another political scientist, called Imran Khan’s remarks baseless and said that terrorist groups and other insurgents had come to Afghanistan from Pakistan over the past 40 years.

However, Bilal Karimi, a deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, denies the Pakistani prime minister’s claim that ISIL is present in Afghanistan, saying that there will never be a threat to the world from Afghanistan. Karimi added that women’s rights in Afghanistan have been respected within the framework of Islam and that the issue of girls’ education is being resolved.

On the other hand, former President Hamid Karzai called Imran Khan’s remarks yesterday an attempt to sow discord among the people and insult the citizens of Afghanistan.

A number of other politicians and social media users, including Amrullah Saleh, the former first vice president, have also reacted to Imran Khan’s remarks.
