KABUL (SW) – A senior health official of the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan on Monday said the issues left behind by the previous administration would get resolved soon.
Abdul Bari Omar, acting head of the Ministry of Health of the Islamic Emirate, told a news conference in Kabul that the country’s health sector was facing many problems and that no fundamental work had been done by the previous government in the past 20 years. He added that the problems of the health sector left over from the previous government will not be solved soon in a short time, and efforts and plans are underway to solve these problems gradually.
He emphasized that the health sector has relied on external assistance over the years and there has been no control or oversight over how health services are provided. Mr. Omar adds that it is difficult to overcome all the problems in the short term and the Islamic Emirate is working to find solutions to improve the health sector.
The officials of the Ministry of Health called on the international community to continue their assistance to the health sector of Afghanistan and to cooperate with the Islamic Emirate in implementing the plans.
Earlier, the World Health Organization warned of the collapse of the health system in Afghanistan and said that if immediate action was not taken, there would be an early humanitarian catastrophe in the country.
