UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that cluster munitions kill and injure civilians indiscriminately.
In a post on his X account on Monday (Sep. 14), Guterres said the use of cluster munitions affects people’s lives and communities for generations.
He said countries should strengthen their political commitment and scale up efforts to clear contaminated areas and support survivors. He also called on countries to take decisive action to build a safer future.
A cluster munition is an air-dropped or ground-launched explosive weapon that releases dozens or hundreds of smaller submunitions. These weapons are banned under the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, which prohibits their use, production, stockpiling and transfer and requires states to help clear contaminated areas and assist survivors.
