Taliban promise to reopen girls schools ‘soon’

KABUL (SW) – Months since the closure of girls schools across Afghanistan, the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate officials vow to resume education for girls ‘soon’.

With the beginning of the 1400 solar academic year, many challenges were faced by the students of the country’s schools. The third wave of the coronavirus pandemic spread across the country, and schools were closed indefinitely as the situation worsened.

After that situation improved, the schools gradually reopened and the teaching process resumed. After the lifting of the restrictions due to the COVID-19, the complete domination of the Islamic Emirate over the country again damaged the educational system and the schools were closed for the second time.

One month after the Islamic Emirate took control of the country, the Ministry of Education issued a statement urging all students to return to school, but they adopted a new education policy and did not allow female students above the sixth grade to be allowed to attend school.

The Islamic Emirate’s decision to not allow girls to go to school provoked strong national and international reactions, and following criticism of the Ministry of Education’s actions, Islamic Emirate officials now say they are working on a plan to get female students back to school.

Ahmadullah Wasiq, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, told Salam Watandar today that the Islamic Emirate is committed to continuing the education of female students soon and that they will be asked to continue their studies after providing a safe educational environment.

However, following the decision of the Ministry of Education, students have repeatedly expressed their concern about this. They have called for a review by the Ministry of Education and stressed the need to reopen schools soon.
