Three civilians, including a journalist, killed by gunmen

KABUL (SW) – Unknown assailants killed three civilians, including a journalist, in Nangarhar province late on Saturday.

According to the Afghanistan Journalists Safety Committee, the incident took place in the provincial capital Jalalabad.

It said that three people, including Seyed Maroof Sadat, were killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen in the fifth district of Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province.

The Committee said that Sayed Maroof Sadat was riding in the car of a relative towards his house when he was shot by unidentified gunmen from a rickshaw. According to the committee, Sadat’s relatives were members of the Taliban.

The Committee further said the two Taliban members were also killed in the incident. Seyed Marouf Sadat’s son and another civilian were also wounded in the shooting. The committee called on the Taliban to seriously investigate the incident.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban must conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into the shooting of Mohammad Ali Ahmadi and hold the perpetrator to account, the Committee to Protect Journalists said last month.

On September 18, an unidentified man shot Ahmadi, a reporter and editor with the privately owned national radio broadcaster Salam Watandar, in Kabul, the capital, according to reports by Voice of America and his employer, and a person familiar with the incident, who spoke to CPJ on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal by the Taliban.

Prior to that, Shakib Siavash and Zafar Momand, two more Salam Watandar journalists who were sent to cover a street protest, were beaten and held hostage by the Taliban.
