Dead bodies of Afghan citizens stranded in Indian morgues

MONITORING (SW) – A number of stranded Afghans in India said the dead bodies of many of their friends and relatives who died in the past few weeks remain locked in government morgues.

A number of Afghan citizens in India, who have been stranded in India for about two months and are trying to return, said they have lost many friends and relatives due to financial problems and inability to pay for their treatment.

They added that they could not even transport the bodies of their family members to Afghanistan, and that the bodies had been left in the Indian morgues for weeks due to the suspension of flights from India to Kabul and the negligence of officials.

Abdullah, who took his mother to India for treatment about two months ago, said they were supposed to stay there for a week, but the Islamic Emirate’s emergence in Kabul prevented them from returning to the country. He said that after a week, he could not afford to stay in India and treat his mother, and because of this, he lost his mother due to the illness.

“One of the most important reasons my mother died was that there was no money, we could not stay here when she got sick, she stayed here for a long time, she became a prisoner,” Abdullah said. “There was also quarantine and there was a lot of psychological pressure.”

Dawood, another Afghan citizen in India, said he lost his father last week and had not been able to transport his body to Afghanistan. According to him, the responsible institutions, in addition to not cooperating with them in this regard, are also mistreating the citizens of Afghanistan.

Citizens of Afghanistan said they have visited embassies and affiliated institutions many times and have been protesting in front of the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for days, but so far no response has been received and no action has been taken.

The officials of the Islamic Emirate did not respond to the queries posed in this regard.
