Situation for journalists getting worst

KABUL (SW) – Press freedom advocates fear situation for journalists is getting worst amid lack of proper security and working climate in the country. 

Officials from the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan have criticized the lack of a proper protection mechanism for journalists, saying that while they have proposed policies for the protection of journalists to the officials of the Islamic Emirate, but they have not yet succeeded in achieving what they wanted.

Masrur Lotfi, media officer of the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan, said in a press conference in Kabul on Wednesday that while in meetings with officials of the Islamic Emirate, he had offered to establish a clear and correct protection mechanism to support journalists, but has not yet achieved what they wanted.

The media officer of the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan added that the journalists are trying to convince the Islamic Emirate, in agreement with the media support institutions, to prepare a regular legal program that can address the problems of journalists.

Meanwhile, a number of journalists who attended the meeting criticized the weakness of the institutions that support journalists and the media, saying that whenever they are subjected to violence, the institutions that support journalists do not take action to guard them. They added that they are calling on the officials of the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Islamic Emirate to come and establish an institution that supports the media.

Meanwhile, Bilal Karimi, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, has said they have set up a working group for journalists and are committed to working with journalists and the media.
