Circulation of Pakistani rupee on the rise

KABUL (SW) – An evident surge in the circulation of Pakistani rupees has been witnessed across Afghanistan with the return to power of the Taliban.

Shopkeepers in Gardez of Paktia province told Salam Watandar that they are trying to use the afghani currency in commercial transactions, but since the Taliban took control of the country, the circulation of rupees in the city has increased.

Residents of Paktika province also say that in the past month, the use of Pakistani rupees instead of Afghanistan’s own currency has increased in the province’s capital and districts.

They called on the Taliban to work hard to preserve the value of the afghani currency.

Meanwhile, residents of Khost province say that in the center and districts of the province, cars and other valuable items are traded with Pakistani rupees, but other goods are sold in afghani currency.

On the other hand, officials of the Taliban Information and Culture Department in Paktia province say that the Islamic Emirate is committed to preserving the value of afghani and has advised all traders and shopkeepers to trade in the local currency.

Abdul Khaliq Ahmadzai, the Taliban’s director of information and culture in Paktia, told Salam Watandar that the local currency has special value and that foreign currencies or that of the neighboring countries should not be used in trade.

About two years ago, campaigns in support of the local currency were launched in a number of provinces, asking shopkeepers and citizens to use the afghani currency in their daily transactions, but now with the resurgence of the rupee in some provinces the devaluation of the afghani has been noted.
