Assets of key former officials frozen

KABUL (SW) – The Taliban have order freezing assets of all key officials and politicians in the previous government.

A well-placed source at the Da Afghanistan Bank, the central bank, told Salam Watandar that the directives have been issued to all private banks in this regard.

The source said all banks have been directed to close the bank accounts of ministers, deputies, political leaders and other former government officials. According to the source, an official announcement will be issued as well.

A number of observers have praised the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s move. Welcoming the move, Nurshah Noorani, a political analyst, said that in the previous regime, there were officials who stole national wealth and made a lot of money through corruption.

Fazlur Rehman Oria, another political analyst, said that in the last 20 years, some officials and politicians have stolen foreign aid and invested most of it abroad.

The central bank’s decision to close the bank accounts of former officials and politicians comes amid repeated reports in the domestic and foreign media that a number of these officials have been accused of widespread corruption and embezzlement.
