Taliban overrun the 207 – Zafar Corps of ANA

HERAT CITY (SW) – The Taliban have overran the 207 – Zafar Corps as well as the airport in Herat province, officials confirmed on Friday.

Ghulam Habib Hashemi, a member of the Herat Provincial Council, told Salam Watandar that before noon on Friday, the Taliban representatives led by Mullah Haidar, one of the group’s commanders, met with senior security officials, including Mohammad Ismail Khan, at the army corps.

According to Hashemi, during the meeting, senior security officials, including Abdul Rahman Rahman, Deputy Chief of Security at the Ministry of Interior, Khayal Nabi Ahmadzai, Commander of the 207 Zafar Corps, Mohammad Ismail Khan, Abdul Sabur Qaneh, Herat Governor, General Hasibaullah Siddiqui, Head of NDS and Herat Police Chief Sayed Marajuddin Sadat were present, and it was agreed that the corps and the airfield should be handed over to the Taliban without harming security forces and officials.

According to Ghulam Habib Hashemi, the Taliban have also agreed that they have nothing to do with any of the security officials and the surrendered security forces. He added that Mohammad Ismail Khan has now returned to his home.

The member of the provincial council said the meeting was mediated by Kamran Alizai, the head of the Herat Provincial Council, who had received an ‘exemption card’ from the Taliban a few days earlier.

Meanwhile, some local sources say that a number of senior security officials wanted to fly to Kabul by plane, but security forces prevented them from flying.
