Taliban capture Fayzabad in Badakhshan

FAYZABAD (SW) – Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan province has fallen to the Taliban, local sources told Salam Watandar.

Local sources in Badakhshan say that with the withdrawal of security forces to Kishm and Farkhar districts, the city of Fayzabad completely fell to the Taliban.

Taliban fighters also captured the provincial prison and released all prisoners after seizing military bases, the provincial administration building, the police headquarters and the army headquarters. The battles for the capture of the city of Fayzabad had started a few days ago, and thousands of families had been displaced as the war spread.

The provincial directorate of refugees announced yesterday that it has received more than 10,000 applications from displaced people in the province, all of whom are seeking help, and that the department has so far been able to help only 3,500 displaced families.

Abdul Wahed Taybi, head of the directorate, said the number of applicants for aid has increased several times in recent weeks. Taybi said that eight joint government teams and aid agencies have started the process of identifying the displaced and the process of providing assistance to the displaced continues.

Meanwhile, a number of IDPs who came to Fayzabad from Badakhshan districts and neighboring provinces say they have abandoned all their property and have only been able to save their lives. They said they need the help of government and donors to meet their needs.

In recent days, the number of war displaced people has increased across the country, and many families have fled to safer areas to save their lives.

Officials in Badakhshan told Salam Watandar that if the process of displacement continued, non-governmental aid organizations will not be able to provide immediate assistance to all displaced persons.

It is worth mentioning that with the escalation of the war in the country, at least 17,000 families from four provinces have fled to Kabul and are now spending the night amid dirt and garbage in parks and other open areas of Kabul city.
