Aqina port closed since two weeks

KABUL (SW) – The Aqina dry port at border with Turkmenistan has been closed for nearly two weeks, said officials.

A number of members of the Faryab Provincial Council confirmed to Salam Watandar that the Aqina crossing has been closed for two weeks and no trade of good was taking place with Turkmenistan.

Aneesa Tayanech, a member of Faryab Provincial Council, said that Taliban fighters had reached close to the Aqina crossing. According to her, therefore, the staff at the crossing has not been able to go to work for two weeks for fear of the Taliban.

The Faryab provincial council member added that no goods were imported from Turkmenistan during this period and the prices of goods in the districts of the province have also increased.

Meanwhile, Aqa Mohammad Nouri, another member of the Faryab Provincial Council, told Salam Watandar that everyone, including the businessmen who were engaged in private and government affairs at the Aqina crossing, had lost their jobs.

The situation has also irked local traders who have expressed concerns as petroleum products and natural gas prices have risen in the markets amid no imports from Turkmenistan.

Maazullah, a petroleum products’ trader in Maymana, the capital of Faryab, said that after the closure of the Aqina crossing, the price for a liter of kerosene increased from 45 afghanis to 55 afghanis, causing concerns in the province.
