Security forces take back control of Karkh district in Herat

HERAT (SW) – The security forces on Friday vowed to retake control of the Karkh district in Herat province from the Taliban.

According to the spokesman for the provincial governor, Jailani Farhad, the decision to launch the offensive was taken by the provincial military council after a visit to Herat by the interior minister and deputy head of the NDS. He said an operation has been launched from the eastern outskirts of the provincial capital to retake the lost district.

He added the special units of the army and police are conducting the operation. Jailani said the security forces got engaged in clashes with the Taliban in the Majghanzak area killing 15 insurgents and wounding another 20. The spokesman said the security forces sustained no losses.

The Karkh district is located at a distance of some 35 kilometers from Herat city, and fell to the Taliban among 16 districts of the province.

The Taliban have not commented on this.
