Mohaqiq says terrorists are freed for bribe, pardoned

KABUL (SW) – Presidential adviser Mohammad Mohaqiq on Wednesday said the perpetrators of terrorist incidents and suicide attacks are released after being arrested through bribery or ‘pardoned’ by the government.

He was speaking on the occasion of the fourth death anniversary Salem Izidyar, son of Mohammad Alam Izidyar, the first deputy speaker of the Masharano Jirga (upper house). Mohaqiq said he was concerned about the escalation of terrorist attacks inflicting heavy toll on the civilians.

In his remarks, Mohaqiq said due to weak rule of law in Afghanistan, the perpetrators of terrorist attacks were either not arrested or, if arrested, were getting free through bribery or by the ‘mercy’ of the government.

According to presidential adviser, although terrorist attacks kill hundreds of people every day, but the government remained little bothered. He said the Taliban want their prisoners released despite them being involved in such attacks.

“They are the ones who are sure that if they get caught, the next day, they will be released either through bribery or with the mercy of the government”, he said.

Salim Izidyar and four other protesters got killed when a demonstration in the diplomatic enclave got violent four years ago.

Speaking during their death anniversary, Habibaullah Hussam, chairman of Afghanistan’s Council of Sunni and Shiite Ulema, said ‘special circles’ collaborated with terrorists who planted explosives at the site of funeral prayers for Izidyar that left nine people killed.

“Special circles from inside helped them, embedded and exploded the explosives in the middle of the funeral prayers. Those who cooperated are now both ministers and senior figures.”

Izidyar’s father, Mohammad Alam Izidyar, the first deputy speaker of the MJ, said that four years later, the perpetrators of his son’s murder and four others have not been identified and arrested. He said those at the helm of the government are involved in killing.

“My impression is that from the head of the government to the end, those who are the decision-makers and who were in charge of the country yesterday, during the national unity government, and who are still in charge today, are complicit in this murder.”

He said there was no political will to prosecute the perpetrators.
