Kabul to remain in dark until security improves in Khenjan

KABUL (SW) – Millions of Kabul residents remained deprived of electricity on the fifth consecutive day following blowing up of power transmission towers in the Salang area.

Four days ago, the power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat announced that it would be able to resume the power supply in three days.

However, Mohammad Hashem Sangar Niazi, spokesman for DABS, said on Saturday that the repair and installation of the two destroyed towers was completed hours before the deadline, but the imported power line in Khenjan district of Baghlan was destroyed by the raging war.

The spokesman added that security forces had not allowed the company’s staff to enter the restive area and that the power outage in Kabul and ten other provinces would continue until the security situation improved.

Last month, First Vice President Amrullah Saleh clarified no arrests have been made in connection with the blowing up of power transmission towers by unidentified miscreants.

In a social media post, the first vice president said that serious preventive measures have been taken to protect the electricity poles from being targeted again.

At the same time, Amrullah Saleh added that a concerted effort is underway to stabilize, detain and punish those responsible for the destruction of electricity towers in the north of Kabul. Saleh called the destruction of the electricity poles as “crime and sedition.”

Earlier, the interior ministry officials had announced that four people were arrested in connection with the destruction of power transmission poles.

According to the power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), at least 13 transmission towers have been destroyed or partially destroyed with landmines in the past two weeks. DABS has called on security agencies to protect power grids and installations from such attacks.

The Taliban deny involvement in such attacks.
