Job opportunities dwindling amid political unrest

KABUL (SW) – Amid political unrest, raging violence and the ambiguity surrounding intra-Afghan peace negotiations, job opportunities are dwindling with an alarming rate.

Officials of the National Union of Workers and Employees of Afghanistan (NUWEA) have described the situation of workers in the country as worrying. According to labor rights activists, the coronavirus pandemic, the deteriorating political situation and the stalled intra-Afghan talks have had a negative impact on the job market.

In a gathering to mark the Labor’s Day, the NUWEA said that the situation of the country’s workers is deteriorating day by day, while the government has taken no action to improve their situation.

“Although, many workers are forced to work for low wages due to rampant unemployment, there are still cases where employers do not pay their wages,” said Maroof Qaderi, head of the NUWEA.

He said the outbreak of the coronavirus amid political uncertainty has led to rising unemployment, and young people are losing their jobs every day.

Baqi Samandar, a member of the National Union of Workers and Employees Afghanistan, said Afghan workers do not have social security and health insurance, which has caused additional problems for them. “I know many laborers who hardly earn enough to feed themselves:, he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has said that although the labor situation in the country is deteriorating, the ministry is working with the private sector to create job opportunities for workers.

Younus Siddiqui, the ministry spokesman said the government is trying to send a number of workers abroad for workd.
