Duties of 8 Afghan diplomats transferred from New Delhi to Kabul

KABUL (SW) – At least eight members of staff at the Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi have been terminated according to a letter issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the foot of this letter is the signature of Mirwais Nab, the deputy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Among those sacked are Safia Popal, Naqim Akrami, Abdul Wahab Rahimi, Ajmal Momand, Abdul Farhad Jilani, Mina Popalzi, Babar Salimi and Waheed Jamal Jabarkhil.

The foreign ministry, however, issued another statement on Monday saying that the decision was made based on the assessment of the Afghan ambassador to New Delhi and that the duties of the eight had been transferred to Kabul.

This has been dubbed as an unprecedented move. Critics say some of these eight diplomats have not yet completed a year of service, and their removal is hurting the foreign ministry and the country’s diplomats.

Faramarz Tamna, former head of the Center for Strategic Studies, has said the best and most knowledgeable staffers have been working for years under the management of ambassadors, deputies and illiterate supervisors. Tamna called on the diplomats’ association to find a way to resolve such disputes permanently.
