Thousands in Nangarhar call for ceasefire

JALALABAD (SW) – Thousands of Nangarhar residents gathered on Monday in support of the democratic system and security forces, unanimously calling for speeding up peace talks and a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan.

They stressed that no deal over the gains of past 20 years was unacceptable to them.

Israrullah Murad, a member of the Nangarhar Provincial Council, called on all parties to the conflict to stop fighting in honor of the holy month of Ramadan and call for a general ceasefire.

Abdul Rauf Shpoon, a member of the Wolesi Jirga from Nangarhar, called on the people to support the system. He asked the Taliban to abide by the ceasefire and not to use force against the people.

On this occasion, religious scholar Daud Mujahid urged the Taliban to share their demands peacefully with the Afghan government through talks.

Acting Interior Minister Hayatullah Hayat also addressed the gathering. Referring to the bitter experiences of the past, he said countries in the region are trying to repeat the history of Dr. Najibullah’s rule in Afghanistan.
