UN sanctions on Taliban dubbed important for peace

KABUL (SW) – Hamdullah Mohib, National Security Adviser, has said the UN sanctions are important in enforcing conditionality on the Taliban for peace in Afghanistan.

He said this while speaking at an online meeting of the UN Security Council’s 1988 Sanctions Committee, which oversees the implementation of UN sanctions on the Taliban. He said: ‘The Taliban has used unprecedented violence against Afghan state and society, and abused the privilege of travel exemptions to dodge talks, and broken promises not to enlist released convicts for terrorism”

Mohib also congratulated India for assuming Committee chairmanship and acknowledged new UNSC members India, Norway, Ireland, Kenya and Mexico. “Afghanistan will work with all our key partners and Security Council members to ensure that sanctions tools are used for their intended purpose of supporting peace by helping Afghanistan encourage peaceful behavior and deter violent activity by the Taliban”, the NSC said in a statement.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani told the UNSC meeting earlier this year the implementation of sanctions was important as a tool for the success of talks with the Taliban.

The sanctions have been imposed on a number of Taliban leaders for years, including travel bans. One of the provisions of the US agreement with the Taliban is the lifting of these sanctions.

However, the Taliban have in the past called President Ghani’s remarks about sanctions against Taliban leaders an attempt to distort the peace process.
