Wolesi Jirga members criticize President Ghani over budget

KABUL (SW) – A number of Wolesi Jirga (lower house) members on Monday criticized the latest remarks by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in regard to the authority of the parliament.

Taking part in the debate over the matter, speaker Mir Rehman Rehmani said the remarks expressed by President Ghani demonstrated lack of knowledge about legalities and jurisdictions of the state institutions. He said the house has all the rights to scrutinize and regulate the annual budget.

He went on to say that ‘certain circles’ have long been undermining the authority of the house and expressing views against its members.

Speaking on the occasion, other members said they would continue to demand uniform and increased salaries for the security forces, teachers and other public servants as well as more development projects in their constituencies.

One such member, Syed Ahmad Sailab said on the occasion that any allegations against the MPs in regard to asking for bribes should be specified and made public instead of blaming all MPs.

This comes days after President Ghani while addressing a public gathering in Nangarhar charged the WJ members of pushing for thousands of additional and personal projects to be incorporated in the annual budget.

It is worth noticing that the draft for annual budget has already been rejected by the house.
