KM begins demolishing Cinema Park in Kabul

KABUL (SW) – The Kabul Municipality has announced that the demolition of Cinema Park has begun in the downtown’s Shahr-e-Nau area.

Samira Rasa, the KM spokesperson, said the current Cinema Park building could not be rebuilt and would hence be demolished. She added that the Kabul Municipality has no plans to rebuild the cinema.

Reacting to the demolition of the Cinema Park by the Kabul Municipality, the Afghan Film Corporation said that it is part of the cultural and cinematic memory of Kabul residents and should not be demolished.

Afghan Film has emphasized that the destruction of the cinema was not a “solution” but a continuation of the “destruction of culture”.

It said in a statement the Afghan Film has repeatedly demanded control over cinemas across the country, but the request was rejected.

In a social media post, Sahra Karimi, the female director of Afghan Film, wrote the destruction of Cinema Park destroyed the cinematic memories of a city!

A number of filmmakers and Kabul residents have also called on the government not to destroy the Cinema Park.
