The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan has reported that 3.4 million people across the country were affected by drought.

In a post on X Sunday (June 28), the agency said that 3.4 million people in Afghanistan were affected by drought across 12 provinces in 2025. OCHA added that groundwater levels are within the bottom 30th percentile of historical records, severely affecting livelihoods across the country.

According to OCHA, this year’s rainfall has brought some relief. However, five consecutive years of drought have left communities across Afghanistan facing depleted water sources, mounting climate pressures, and uncertainty about the coming season.

Earlier, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that nearly 10 million people in Afghanistan were affected by climate change during the previous year.
