TEHRAN (SW) – Mohammad Reza Hashemi, the governor of South Khorasan province in Iran, has stated that his country is working to establish a consulate in Farah province to strengthen its relations with Afghanistan in the current solar year.
According to the news agency IRNA, Hashemi made this announcement on Tuesday, adding that Iran is also looking to establish an Afghan consulate in Birjand, Iran.
“South Khorasan, with the longest shared border with Afghanistan and four border markets, has immense potential for expanding trade exchanges with this country,” Hashemi said.
The governor emphasized that this initiative aims to promote trade, cultural relations, and facilitate easier movement for citizens of both countries.
Iran is one of Afghanistan’s key trade partners, and according to Iranian officials, Afghanistan has now become the fifth-largest destination for Iran’s exported goods.
Based on data provided by Iran, the two countries exchanged goods worth 3.197 billion dollars in 2024, marking an 84% increase compared to 2023.
