KABUL (SW) – Officials from the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS ) state that 89 children suffering from “severe burns and bone infections” will be sent to Germany for treatment in collaboration with the “German Peace Village” organization.
Shahabuddin Delawar, the acting head of the ARCS, said: “of the 74 children who were previously sent to Germany for treatment, 46 of them will return to Kabul on Thursday after receiving medical care. On the same day, 89 more will be transferred to Germany for treatment.”
The ARCS officials further explain that the number of patients suffering from severe burns and bone infections in Afghanistan is high, and the treatment capacity of the German Peace Village should be increased to accommodate more patients.
Meanwhile, Ms. Claudia, the head of the German Peace Village, said the organization is working to provide better treatment opportunities for the children in Germany.
“We are striving to provide better treatment opportunities for your children in Germany, and once they are healed, we will ensure they return to the arms of their families,” she said.
Additionally, some families of children with severe burns and bone infections say that treatment for their children is not possible in Afghanistan, which is the reason they are being sent to Germany.
Asadullah, a resident of Maidan Wardak whose young daughter has a bone infection, says: “I went to the provincial hospital in Maidan Wardak, but they couldn’t treat her. I went to private hospitals in Maidan Wardak, and they said they couldn’t help either. Finally, orthopedic doctors from the province referred my child to the Child Health Hospital, and she has been hospitalized there for two months. After that, the doctors advised us that the disease couldn’t be treated here; either we should send her to India or Germany.”
Sayed Aqa, a resident of Kunduz whose eight-year-old son severely burned himself by falling into a traditional oven, says that now arrangements are being made to treat his child in Germany. “When my child fell into the oven in Kabul, he was treated, but his condition was critical. Now they are taking him to Germany.”
It is worth noting that under a joint agreement between the German Peace Village and the Afghan Red Crescent Society, since 1988, a total of 4,920 patients suffering from various diseases have been treated in Germany.
