KABUL (SW) – The European Union has announced the allocation of 31 million euros to support Afghanistan’s health sector, directing funds to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The EU has issued a statement indicating that 16 million euros will be provided to the WHO and 15 million euros to the UNFPA.
According to the statement, these funds are designated for healthcare services aimed at treating non-communicable diseases, including cancer.
The EU also emphasized that this assistance will support mothers, children, and adolescents in Afghanistan’s remote areas.
The union described the health situation for pregnant women, newborns, and children in Afghanistan as dire, noting that mortality rates among these groups rank among the highest globally.
The statement also revealed that, on average, one mother dies every two hours due to preventable complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.
