WHO says 2.9 million Afghan children facing malnutrition amid food insecurity

KABUL (SW) – The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that due to food insecurity in Afghanistan, 2.9 million children under the age of five are experiencing malnutrition.

In a report released on Thursday, September 12, the WHO’s Afghanistan office highlighted that out of these children, 850,000 are suffering from severe malnutrition.

The organization noted that one-third of Afghanistan’s population lives in areas with food insecurity, and recent flooding has exacerbated the situation.

The WHO’s report also mentioned that in 2024 year, 21,000 children with severe malnutrition have been treated across 140 nutrition treatment centers in Afghanistan.

The organization has called on the international community for urgent support to provide necessary health and food assistance to the Afghan people.

Previously, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) had indicated that approximately four million children and women in Afghanistan are expected to suffer from severe malnutrition this year.
