KABUL (SW) – The Meteorology Department of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has warned of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in 8 provinces over the next two days.
According to officials from the ministry, significant rainfall is anticipated in the provinces of Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Logar, Paktia, Khost, and Paktika on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
Mohammad Nasim Moradi, the head of the Meteorology Department, has forecasted rainfall between 10 to 30 millimeters across various regions. He said, “On August 14 and 15, 2024, there is a likelihood of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds with dust, and subsequent flooding in the provinces.”
The Ministry of Energy and Water has also issued a warning about the risk of flooding in these eight provinces. Motiullah Abed, spokesperson for the ministry, told Salam Watandar, “Residents should avoid flood-prone zones to ensure their safety.”
Meanwhile, residents in some provinces where flooding is forecasted in the coming days are calling for the construction of check dames and retaining walls to prevent floodwaters from inundating their areas.
Gul Agha from Laghman shared his concerns: “Previously, heavy rains caused significant flooding that damaged our homes. The walls and roof collapsed, and nobody checked on us. We urge the government to build retaining walls to prevent future floods from destroying our homes and lives.”
Qodratullah from Nangarhar, also said, “The floods have already devastated our homes. If another flood occurs, it will cause even more destruction. We need our concerns addressed and retaining walls built to protect our homes from future damages.”
The Meteorology Department also warned of strong winds with dust in northern, northeastern, western, southeastern, and central provinces, including the Salang Pass, on Wednesday and Thursday.
