JALALABAD CITY (SW) – In a tragic turn of events, severe rains have wreaked havoc in Nangarhar province, causing extensive human and financial losses.
Saifur, a 65-year-old resident of Sorkhrod district in Nangarhar, lost 11 family members two days ago when the roof of his house collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
He says that among the deceased were his sons and grandchildren. “One of my sons, who got married last year, died along with his two children,” Saifur tearfully explained. “We were celebrating the birth of his daughter; we were so happy, but now…”
Fawad, a neighbor of Saifur, with his mud-soaked shirt leaning against a wall, mentioned that since recovering the bodies from the debris flow two days ago, he has been unable to sleep due to the immense distress.
According to Sediqullah Quraishi, Head of Information at the Nangarhar Directorate of Information and Culture, the severe rains in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, and the districts of Sorkhrod, Behsud, and Bati Kot resulted in the deaths of 35 people and injuries to more than 300 others.
In addition to the collapse of 400 residential houses, telecommunication and power network poles have also fallen, cutting off electricity access for many residents.
The recent heavy rains also caused casualties and financial losses in Kunar and Laghman provinces.
