Ruinous floods in Baghlan also damage historic sites

POL-E KHOMRI (SW) – Officials at the Directorate of Information and Culture of Baghlan report that dozens of historic relics and places in seven districts of the province have been completely and partially destroyed as a result of recent floods.

Ezatmir Haqani, the tourism director of Baghlan Directorate of Information and Culture, says that these ancient artefacts and places have been destroyed in the districts of Dahane Ghori, Dand-e Ghori, Burka, Jalga, Nahrin, Khost-and-Fering and Noor Pass.

“Some places in Burkah, Jalga, and Nahrin districts have been completely destroyed, and in some districts, such as Pol-e Khomri in Shamraq area, Dand-e Ghori area, or in central Baghlan, ancient artefacts and places and historical areas have been partially destroyed,” he added.

Haqani emphasized that most of the ancient works and places of Baghlan, which were previously damaged as a result of natural disasters, are facing the risk of destruction.

126 ancient places in Baghlan have been registered by the Directorate of Information and Culture of the province, and 90% of these places need to be restored.

On the other hand, a number of Baghlan residents say that ancient works and places that are in danger of being destroyed should be preserved.

Mohammad Shirwan, a resident of Baghlan, says: “The ancient works have been destroyed a lot. They must be restored. The government should pay attention in this regard because ancient artefacts are the assets of the country.

Zabihullah, another resident of Baghlan, adds: “We want the government to pay more attention to the restoration of ancient artefacts and places because it is important to preserve these works and people should come to visit these places and help boost economy.”

Baghlan in the north of Afghanistan has many ancient monuments and places, some of which are about 2000 years old, such as Kafir Qala, which is from the Kushans and the Buddhists era.
