Floods in Afghanistan ‘would exacerbate’ food insecurity: WFP

MONITORING (SW) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan has announced that the recent floods over the past two weeks have affected 80,000 people.

The organization stated on Wednesday, May 22, via its X social media account, that these devastating floods are likely to increase in the coming months.

The WFP warned that the floods would further exacerbate food insecurity in Afghanistan.

In the past week, provinces such as Baghlan, Takhar, Ghor, Faryab, Badakhshan, Badghis, Bamyan, and Kapisa have witnessed destructive and deadly floods.

The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) announced on Tuesday that the floods over the past 11 days have resulted in 294 deaths and 266 injuries.

According to the statistics provided by the ministry, nearly 15,000 residential houses have been completely or partially destroyed, and over 6,000 livestock have perished in these floods.
