UN Security Council holds meeting on appointment of special representative for Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – The United Nations Security Council is set to hold a meeting today -Monday, February 26- with the presence of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and members of this council.

Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Head of Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, tells Salaam Watandar that in this meeting, a report will be presented by the UN Secretary-General regarding the appointment of a special representative by the organization for Afghanistan and the recent Doha meeting.

Faiq states, “In this meeting, the Secretary-General will present a report to the Security Council regarding the appointment of the Special Representative and the recent Doha meeting, based on Resolution 2721.”

Due to the discrepancy between the countries, especially the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, the appointment of the special representative for Afghanistan has not been implemented so far, and the recent meeting of the United Nations in Doha ended without any decision in this regard.

Abdul Jabbar Akbari, an expert on political issues, says that the United Nations Security Council has not been able to reach a consensus among the members of the council regarding Afghanistan with the meetings it has held in the past two years.
