KABUL (SW) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has announced that 160,000 cases of acute respiratory diseases were registered in Afghanistan last month.
UNICEF said in a report on Tuesday, that this statistic shows a 16% increase compared to the same time last year.
UNICEF added that 62% of these patients are children under five years old.
According to the report, extreme cold and air pollution have been the main causes of the increase in respiratory disease in Afghanistan.
In the report, it is stated that in order to combat acute respiratory diseases in Afghanistan, with the funds and support of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, UNICEF distributed medical supplies and heating materials to medical centers and paid the cost of operating 2,400 medical centers and the salaries of 27,000 health workers.
