UNAMA calls for non-political collaboration on climate change for Afghanistan

KABUL (SW) – Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says that all parties shall work in a “non-political and constructive” manner in the field of climate change for the benefit of the Afghan citizens.

she added that Climate change has negatively affected the daily lives of millions of people in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is still among the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, which is the least prepared to face the effects of climate change, said Otunbayeva.

The head of the UNAMA, has emphasized that nearly 20 million Afghan citizens are facing a “food insecurity crisis” caused by drought, economic challenges and natural hazards such as earthquakes.

Ms. Otunbayeva, is optimistic that a representative from Afghanistan will also have presence in future “COP” meetings.

The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) has been held with the presence of 70,000 delegates from around the world. No representative from Afghanistan has been invited.
