Earthquake victims still longing for support

HERAT (SW) – A number of the victims of the second strong earthquake in the village of “Shakarab” in Golran district of Herat, complaining about the indifference of the authorities and aid agencies in handling their situation, say that after two weeks of this earthquake, they still have not received enough help.

Gul Ahmad, a resident of Shekarab village, says: “Our home is completely destroyed, our belongings are under rubles, our food is left under the rubble, our children are frozen, they are taken to the district hospital daily for treatment with their own money. we give.”

Residents of Shekarab village say that the women and children have perished due to lack of shelter, cold and lack of access to food and water. They want health and food assistance from the caretaker government and aid institutions to the residents of this village.

Abdul Shakur, another resident of the village, says: “We request the government and foreign aid institutions to take care of us as soon as possible because our women and children have perished due to the cold.”

However, the officials of the aid regulation committee in Herat say that all aid is distributed transparently to the residents of the earthquake-affected parts of the province.

Abdul Qadir Nasser, the head of this committee, says that emergency aid has been distributed to the affected people in Zindajan, Golran, Rabat Sangi and Injil districts. He adds: “There are plans in place to identify the victims, and employees are conducting surveys every day. Aid has already been distributed, and aid will be distributed to all the affected people.”

On the other hand, the officials of the Herat Earthquake Victims Commission want cooperation to build houses and distribute more tents to the residents of the districts affected by the earthquake.

Mohammad Bashar Halimi, the head of this commission, says that so far, tents have not been distributed to a number of residents of the earthquake-affected areas. He adds: “At the moment, we need two things very much, one is building houses because the area is cold and you cannot live in a tent, and secondly, the lack of tents has affected the residents of a number of affected areas.”

According to the statistics, as a result of the earthquakes in Herat in the last two weeks, more than three thousand houses were destroyed and more than 12 thousand families were affected. Also, as a result of these earthquakes, more than 1,500 people have died and more than 2,000 people have been injured.
